Welcome to the 9th Annual Sylvan Lake Half! We have tried to include all information you will need to complete the race and hopefully enjoy your experience. If any of your questions are not answered below, please do not hesitate to contact us.

PRIZES
All competitors are eligible for Age Group prizes.  Age groups will be in 5 year categories.  There is no Pro category and no prize purse this year.


SWIM COURSE

The swim Starts promptly at 8am on the end of the Sylvan Lake Pier. It is a water start so all competitors MUST be in the water by no later than 7:55. Swim course will remain one loop.

BIKE COURSE

The bike course begins at the mount line  just outside transition on Lakeshore Drive/Highway 11a and heads west out of town. You will continue west to the junction of highway 11a and highway 11. You'll turn right on highway #11 and proceed to highway #766 from . Take a right and head north on highway #766 for another 10 kms until you come to the out and back portion of the bike on Rainy Creek Road. Take a right again and head east to the turnaround. Then head back to highway #766 and turn right and head north to highway #12. Take a right and head east over the hilly section and on down to highway #20. Take a right on highway #20 and head south over the last climb. Descend the hill being aware that you turn right at the base of the hill onto Jarvis Bay drive. Follow Jarvis Bay to Lakeshore Drive. You'll hop onto Lakeshore for a few seconds and then take a hard right on 36th. Then turn right on 50th Ave and head home to 50th Street and Transition.    


RUN COURSE

TRANSITION

After dismounting at the line, run or walk your bike to the bike rack and rack it in your assigned spot. Undo your helmet only after you have racked your bike. Once you're ready, head out of transition and onto the run. There will be a change tent for both Men and Women.


AID STATIONS

Aid Station locations are marked on both the bike and run course maps.


GENERAL RULES

The Sylvan Lake Half follows all ATA and Triathlon Canada rules.

SWIM:

  1. All swimmers must wear the swim cap provided by the race.

  2. The swim course will be closed 1 hour and 10 minutes after the start of the race. Participants still in the water after this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue in the event.

  3. Wetsuits are allowed and highly recommended! Due to the nature of our climate, the water temperature can vary between 74 and 58 degrees Fahrenheit, therefore, it is recommended that you wear a wetsuit! Note: We do have volunteers to help strip your wetsuit at the swim/bike transition, so please make sure that you are wearing something under your wetsuit!

  4. Our race features a mass water start at the end of the Sylvan Lake Pier. There will be 750+ competitors, so please seed yourself accordingly.

BIKE:

  1. There is no warming up on the bike before the race.

  2. You may not ride your bike in the transition area.

  3. There will be a repair station on the course. You may not have any other help in repairing a mechanical problem on your bike other than our official repair mechanics.

  4. If you need repairs to your bicycle during the race, you can wait for race course support or you can ask one of the motorcycle outriders to bring a bike mechanic to you on the course. AT NO TIME, and for no reason, may your bike be transported by someone else.

Drafting: Drafting on the bike will be strictly enforced by four drafting marshals. The draft zone is 3m x 10m - or the size of a minvan. Drafting will be strictly enforced.

1st Offence = 4 Minute penalty in Sin Bin. Your number will be radioed to Transition. You will serve a 4 minute penalty upon entering T2 after the bike. You will not be allowed food or water and your bike will be taken from you.

2nd Offence = Disqualification

RUN:

  1. You must wear your race number on the front during the run. You may not fold or bend your number in any way.

  2. A shirt must be worn at all times during the bike a run segments.

  3. When exiting Jarvis Bay Drive and running along Highway 20, all runners must run on the dirt trail next to the Highway. Doing otherwise will result in an immediate disqualification.

GENERAL RULES:

  1. Course marshals (not volunteers) shall have the authority to disqualify participants.

  2. Medical personnel shall have the ultimate and final authority to remove a participant from the race if they judge the participant to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury. Medical transport of any participant will result in disqualification.

  3. Good sportsmanship is demanded from all participants. Any unsportsmanlike behavior is grounds for disqualification.

  4. A 'Thank You' to volunteers will go a long way in showing them how much we appreciate their generous contribution to the race.

  5. If you withdraw from the race at any time, please notify an official with a walkie-talkie. For your own safety and our peace of mind, it is essential that we know where you are on the course at all times.
